The criteria for the ABTC Leigh Carter Sportsmanship award states that
the individual should have “made a difference in the sport of purebred
dogs, embodied the ABTC Code of Ethics, and have been an active and
valued member of the ABTC.” This year’s winner personifies the spirit of
the award. Her contributions to the sport of dogs, most particularly
Tervuren, are exemplary.
One of her nominating letters read as follows:
This year’s recipient participates in conformation and other dog sports,
having earned obedience and agility titles with various Terv partners,
but (according to her nominees) her forte lies in the herding arena.
She opens her farm for trials, works tirelessly behind the scenes doing
the very unglamorous tasks to ensure a trial that not only runs
smoothly, but creates conditions to fairly and equitably maximize the
success of all dog and handler teams on all courses, with all stock. Of
course, this is in addition to her commitment to the good care and
handling of her sheep and ducks. Her love of herding is infectious and
she eagerly nurtures that same love in newcomers, while not only
instilling the importance of maintaining the herding heritage, but
also in safeguarding the physical and mental capabilities of our
wonderful Tervs that allows them to excel in any activity their owners
choose to pursue! We have witnessed her give of herself in this way on
countless occasions over the years in a continuous and sustained effort
to teach others about our breed. Also, she shares her professional
expertise, and never hesitates to help out Belgian owners in general
with health issues with their dogs. She is unwaveringly ethical and
honest. In addition, she has invested countless hours spearheading the
very important task of organizing and updating the ABTC Archives.
This benefits the current and future membership of the ABTC by insuring
that a complete visual history is safeguarded for the future.
Our honoree is currently working for the ABTC as a board member. She
continues to give to our beloved breed in many ways, and has made a
significant and positive difference in the sport of purebred dogs as a
trainer, a mentor, and a highly successful exhibitor. She is most
deserving of this prestigious honor.
The ABTC is pleased to announce that Libbye Miller DVM is the recipient
of the 2010 Leigh Carter Memorial Sportsmanship Award.
